Choosing Your AWG Matching Wire Gauge to Your Tools
AWG (American Wire Gauge) determines how much current the cord can safely carry. Lower AWG = thicker wire = higher amperage capacity. Exceeding the amperage rating causes the cord to overheat the circuit breaker will trip, but repeated overloading degrades the cord over time.
- 16AWG / 8A 40ft: Light-duty tools drills, sanders, small grinders, shop lights, battery chargers. Not suitable for table saws, air compressors, or other high-draw equipment.
